Hasnat Abdullah, one of the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has said that President Md. Shahabuddin will be removed by this week.
He made this statement on Tuesday (October 22) around 11:30 PM while addressing the protesters during a rally in front of Bangabhaban.
“We will remove Shahabuddin on Wednesday or Thursday. The decision about who will be the next president will be made based on the advice of all the major political parties. If we remove the current president without deciding who the next president is going to be, then our neighboring countries will have the opportunity to conspire against us. Not only that, they may also try to intervene if the country operates without a president. So we will heed advice from all the political parties that have been oppressed for the last 15 years,” said Hasanat.
Earlier, around 9:45 PM on Tuesday, when police approached Bangabhaban, the protesters chased them away. After some time, the protesters attacked a police vehicle. As a result, two police were injured and a couple of them left their arms. Sources tell that protesters handed over those firearms to the army.
On Tuesday, around 10:30 pm, hundreds of people gathered and chanted slogans. They demanded the resignation of Shahabuddin.
At the same time, a large number of army personnel were seen positioned with armored vehicles at the gates of Bangabhaban. At 11:20 pm came Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, the two influential coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Movement. They declared that the president must resign on either Wednesday or Thursday. Furthermore, they also mentioned that based on the opinions of all political parties, they would decide the selection of the next president.
They also said, "The neighboring countries have started to conspire against the country on this issue. We will not let that happen."
