Surma River running upstream with heavy rains is flowing 33 cm above the water line. This has worsened the flood situation in Sunamganj. Due to inundation of flood water, the road communication of Sunamganj sadar upazila with Biswambharpur, Tahirpur and Jamalganj upazilas has been cut off.
Along with the rains, the water flow in the rivers and rivers has increased. Tahirpur upazila is the most affected.
In Tahirpur upazila, the roads and houses are flooded. 34 shelters have been opened by the administration and they formed volunteer teams to take residents of each union to shelters.
According to the sources of the District Water Development Board (PUBO), the water level was 8.13 meters at Sholghar Point in the city at 6 am on Tuesday, which was 33 cm above the danger level. At the same time on Monday, the water there was 11 cm below the danger line. In last 24 hours, the water was increased by 44 cms. Apart from this, the water of Surma river is above the limit in the district.
Tahirpur-Sunamganj road has been isolated for three days. District Sadar, Tahirpur, Doarabazar and Biswambharpur upazilas were once again flooded on Monday.
Local residents said that the roads along the banks of the Surma River in Sunamganj town were flooded. They have suffered due to water entering their houses and businesses. In Launchghat, Jalilpur, Mallikpur, North Arpinnagar, Tegharia, Nabinagar, Wejkhali, Mallikpur and Barapara areas of the city, Surma-water has entered roads and houses on the banks of Surma River. Heavy rain last night caused the water to rise.
