Laila Kaniz, the first wife of former National Board of Revenue (NBR) official Matiur Rahman, has requested a Dhaka court to lift a travel ban imposed on her. She appeared in court on Sunday and filed the application through her lawyer.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammed Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain has scheduled a hearing on this application for July 27, as confirmed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Public Prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam.
Laila Kaniz serves as the chairman of Raipura Upazila Parishad in Narsingdi. According to PP Salam, Matiur Rahman is accused of amassing substantial wealth through corrupt means, an allegation currently under investigation by the ACC.
The travel ban was issued on June 24 after the ACC filed an application in court, following attempts by Matiur, Laila, and their family members, including their son, to leave the country.
The case drew significant attention when Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat, identifying Matiur as his father, posted on Facebook about buying a goat for Eid-ul-Azha for Tk15 lakh. This raised questions about how an official with a basic monthly salary of Tk78,000 at his grade (grade-1) could afford such a luxury.
