The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday sent letters to relevant authorities asking for details about the fake information in the passports and national identification cards (NID) belonging to two brothers of ex-army chief Aziz Ahmed.
Aziz Ahmed allegedly aided his brothers Tofayel Ahmed Joseph and Haris Ahmed procure passports and national identification cards with fake information. The US last month imposed sanctions on him and his immediate family members, barring their entry into the country, Daily Sun reported.
In the letter sent the NID wing of Election Commission (EC), the ACC has asked authorities how the two Aziz brothers managed to get identification cards despite providing fake information.
The EC has already starts its own investigation into the NIDs of the two brothers of Aziz Ahmed.
The two brothers of Aziz Ahmed, as well as a third brother Anis Ahmed, were convicted for the murder of Freedom Party leader Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa in the capital’s Mohammadpur area in 1996.
Joseph was given death sentence, while the other two brothers Haris and Anis got life in prison. In December 2015, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court reduced Joseph’s sentence to life imprisonment.
Later, he got presidential pardon for seeking medical treatment abroad.
The Home Ministry also published a notification in March 2019 pardoning the other two Aziz brothers.
