Bashundhara Group, the country’s largest business conglomerate, has pushed 25,000 families in Brahmanbaria to self-reliance so far.
Md Maymun Kabir, DGM of Bashundhara Foundation, disclosed the information at the 66th disbursement of interest-free loans among the destitute people at its office premises at Bancharampur upazila in the district on Monday.
Noted litterateur Imdadul Haq Milan, Editor-in-Chief of the Kaler Kantho, attended the loan disbursement programme as the chief guest, reports Daily Sun.
Hailing from 16 villages of the upazila, 470 distressed women received the loan, taking a total amount Tk 70,50,000 on the day.
Terming interest-free loan disbursement rare in the history of the world, Imdadul Haq Milan said Bashundhara Group is the first to come with such scheme for cause of humanity.
“Only Bashundhara Group can stand by people without any expectation of feedback. Interest-free loan is one of various schemes adopted by Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan meant for economic emancipation of the poor women,” he said.
He said interest-free loan to the tune of Tk 22 crore has been disbursed till date, adding that recovery of loan is 100 percent.
“I talked to many beneficiaries who have claimed to be solvent making the best use of the interest-free loan,” he opined.
Md Maymun Kabir said “Hon’ble Chairman Sir of Bashundhara Group established the Bashundhara Foundation to upgrade the life standard of the disadvantaged people in the society. First segment of loan disbursement was held on December 8, 2005. Currently, 95 villages of Bancharampur, Nabinagar and Homna upazilas have come under coverage of the loan. All of the 25,000 recipient women are self-sufficient now. The noble scheme will continue.”
