A total of 34 fishermen went missing as 11 fishing boats capsized in the Bay of Bengal due to depression over North Bay and adjoining areas on Friday, said Bangladesh Coast Guard.
The missing trawlers are MV Mamoni (3), FB Saiful, FB Al Mamun, FB Kulsun, FB Rafique Majhi, FB Nurbanu and FB Mayer Doa and one each from Bhola’s Charfassion, Galachipa, Panpotti, Kalapara and Napita area of Barguna district, reports UNB.
All 11 fishing trawlers were carrying 160 fishermen and capsized in the Bay between 12 pm to 10 pm on Friday.
Fortunately, some fishermen managed to swim ashore, said the Coast Guard.
A total of 126 fishermen managed to swim ashore when the trawlers sank due to strong tide, said Nizampur Coast Guard Contingent Commander Selim Mandal.
Coast Guard members are conducting operations to trace the missing fishermen, he added.
The country’s maritime ports have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal three as the weather marked low over Northeast Bay, said the weather department on Saturday.
All fishing boats and trawlers in the North Bay have been advised to come close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice, it added.
