Cervical and breast cancers are two of the most formidable causes of women’s death in the country, killing some 11,754 women every year.
Of those, 4,971 women die from the cervical cancer while 6,783 die from the breast cancer. Experts emphasized on incubation program and screening to increase consciousness.
Expert on Monday made these comments while addressing a seminar organized on the occasion of “Cervical and Breast Cancer Prevention Week 2025”.
“Breast and cervical cancers can be prevented through tests and vaccination,” said cancer specialist Prof Dr Nahreen Akhtar, adding: “It is very important to do CBE for breast cancer screening and VIA for cervical cancer screening.”
She highlighted the importance of vaccination and awareness to prevent these cancers.
She said that cervical and breast cancers are among the most common types of cancer in women worldwide. Treatment for these diseases is limited and expensive in both the public and private sectors in the country. If cervical and breast cancer are detected at an early stage, it is possible to reduce the number of deaths.
The gynecologists said: “There are currently about three crore 27 lakh and 50 thousand women in the country in their thirties. According to the demography, at least 655,000 to 982,000 women in the country are pre-cancerous/cancer affected.”
