Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has explained why Moscow trusts Donald Trump over US President Joe Biden in handling the Ukraine conflict. In a recent interview with Kommersant, Lavrov pointed out that, unlike the European Union and the UK, Trump’s administration sought to understand the root causes of the conflict and the involvement of NATO, reads an RT report.
Lavrov claimed that the US and EU actions in organizing the 2014 anti-constitutional coup in Kiev contributed to the ongoing confrontation with Russia. He highlighted Trump’s acknowledgment of the mistake made by Biden’s administration in bringing Ukraine closer to NATO, which Russia perceives as a security threat.
The foreign minister emphasized that Moscow should not dismiss Trump’s approach to negotiations, referencing the recent talks in Saudi Arabia, where US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, conveyed Trump’s pragmatic and common-sense approach to foreign policy. Lavrov also stressed that Russia and the US should collaborate when their national interests align, while avoiding escalation in areas of disagreement.
Lavrov's comments come as Trump continues to engage diplomatically with Russia, focusing on a potential ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict. Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, recently met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, marking their third meeting this year. Lavrov concluded that Russia is open to deals that are mutually beneficial but remains cautious of agreements designed to trap the country.
