A powerful explosion at an explosives factory in the Karesi district of Balıkesir, western Turkiye, claimed 12 lives and left three others injured on Tuesday, reads a Daily Sabah report.
The incident occurred in the factory’s capsule production section in the rural Kavaklı neighborhood. The cause of the blast remains under investigation, according to local authorities.
Emergency response teams, including health and fire services, rushed to the scene following the explosion. Balıkesir Governor İsmail Ustaoglu confirmed the fatalities and injuries, stating, "An explosion occurred at the ZSR explosive production facility. The building collapsed after the explosion in the capsule production section. All our teams are here, working tirelessly."
The injured individuals have been hospitalized, and their conditions are reported as stable. Efforts are ongoing to determine the number of people present in the building at the time of the explosion.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the tragic incident as rescue operations proceed.
