The military of South Korea stated that North Korea has blown up sections of the roads connecting the two nations. The blasts occurred around midday (03:00 GMT) in areas north of the military demarcation line, as stated by the Joint Chiefs of Staff in a message to the press on Tuesday, reports Al Jazeera.
Tensions have increased recently after North Korea accused South Korea of sending drones with propaganda leaflets over Pyongyang. The explosions followed a meeting where North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called the drone flights a “serious provocation” and discussed military responses to defend the country.
North Korea has also placed its artillery units on standby for potential attacks if drones are spotted again. South Korea has not confirmed sending drones but warned of serious consequences if its citizens are threatened.
This road destruction is part of Kim Jong Un’s plan to cut ties with South Korea and solidify it as the main enemy, moving away from past efforts for peaceful unification. In 2020, North Korea destroyed the inter-Korean liaison office, marking the end of a period of improved relations.
In November, North Korea revealed intentions to deploy additional troops and military equipment to the border, declaring it would disregard a 2018 military agreement after South Korea suspended parts of it following North Korea's satellite launch. South Korean officials have noted that North Korea has been reinforcing the border by adding barriers and laying mines on 2024.
