Sri Lanka closed schools in Colombo on Monday as heavy rains caused widespread flooding across the island nation, reports UNB.
Over the weekend, heavy downpours devastated several regions, flooding homes, fields, and roads. According to the country's Disaster Management Center, three people have drowned, and around 134,000 people have been affected by the floods.
Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Center reported that 240 houses have been damaged, and nearly 7,000 people have been evacuated. As a precaution, authorities have cut electricity in some areas.
Navy and army troops have been deployed for rescue operations and to distribute food and other essentials. Local television channels showed footage of flooded towns in the suburbs of Colombo, with water levels reaching the roofs of houses and shops in some areas.
Since May, Sri Lanka has faced severe weather conditions, largely due to heavy monsoon rains. In June, 16 people lost their lives due to floods and mudslides.
