The Syrian foreign ministry condemned an Israeli airstrike on Damascus that killed seven people and injured many others. Israeli missiles hit a residential building in the Mezzah neighborhood, west of Damascus on Tuesday. The Syrian army reported that at least seven people, including women and children, died, and eleven others were wounded in the attack, reports press tv.
“Nearly at 20.15 on Tuesday, the Israeli enemy launched an aerial aggression with 3 missiles from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting a residential building at the densely-populated Mezzah neighborhood in Damascus, claiming the lives of 7 civilians, among them women and children, injuring 11 others in initial toll and causing huge material damages to properties,” a Syrian military source told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
The source added that works are underway to rescue others from under the debris.
The Syrian foreign ministry described the Israeli attack as a brutal crime against innocent civilians on Tuesday night. The ministry stated that the strike is part of Israel's ongoing violence in the region, affecting Lebanon and Palestine as well. The Iranian embassy in Damascus also condemned the attack, calling it a terrorist bombing, but noted that no Iranians were among the victims.
Syria has repeatedly urged the UN Security Council to act against these attacks, seeing them as clear violations of its sovereignty. Israel often targets military positions in Syria, especially those of Hezbollah, which has been crucial in supporting the Syrian army against foreign-backed terrorists.
The Tel Aviv government rarely discusses its attacks on Syrian territory, which many believe are a response to the Syrian government's success in fighting terrorism. Damascus has repeatedly asked the UN Security Council to stop these attacks, which violate Syria's sovereignty.
Israeli attacks on Syria continue while the government is involved in ongoing violence in the Gaza Strip, where over 41,600 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in the past year.
