The police have arrested an activist of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, the youth wing of the Awami League, in Chattogram on charges of killing students by open firing at them during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Touhidul Islam Prakash, 32, was held on Friday in the Kamalnagar area under Satkhira Sadar upazila and later he was brought to Chattogram.
The police said he is accused in 12 cases, including five over murder charges filed with Chandgaon police station.
Aftab Uddin, officer-in-charge of the police station, said during primary interrogation, Touhidul admitted his involvement in killing demonstrators during the movement.
On 4 August, he alone fired 28 bullets indiscriminately at the protesters, the OC said, quoting the accused.
On Saturday, a press conference was held at the Chattogram Metropolitan Police following the arrest.
Touhidul is locally known as a follower of local Awami League leader Esrarul Haque, also a former councillor of the city corporation's Chandgaon ward.
The police said they are conducting drives to recover the gun Touhidul used to fire at protesters.
