Gary Ruvkun and Victor Ambros have been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology. They got this coveted prize for the discovery of microRNA and its role in gene regulation, reports Aljazeera.
On Monday, the Nobel assembly said in a statement that the laureates discovered the new class of tiny RNA molecules, which play a crucial role in gene regulation.
“Their groundbreaking discovery revealed a completely new principle of gene regulation that turned out to be essential for multicellular organisms, including humans,” said the Nobel announcement.
Traditionally, the medicine prize is always announced first, with the remaining five set to be unveiled over the coming days.
The Nobel Assembly of Sweden’s Karolinska Institute Medical University decides the winners for medicine. The winners will receive a prize sum of 11 million Swedish crowns(equivalent to $1.1 million.)
Created in the will of Alfred Nobel(Swedish dynamite inventor), the prizes have been awarded for breakthroughs in science, literature and peace, economics, and medicine.
