The Democratic presidential nominee met with Arab American and Muslim leaders in Flint, Michigan, as her campaign seeks to win back supporters lost over the White House’s support for Israel, reports Al Jazeera.
Harris reportedly expressed her concern about suffering in Gaza, civilian casualties and displacement in Lebanon during the 30-minute meeting, a campaign official said. The Vice President also discussed efforts to end the war and prevent a wider regional war, the official added.
Muslim and Arab voters resoundingly backed US President Joe Biden in 2020, but there are concerns that they could withhold their votes from Harris, potentially costing her the key state of Michigan.
Wa’el Alzayat, CEO of Muslim American advocacy group Emgage Action, which recently endorsed Harris, said those at the meeting shared their disappointment with the handling of the crisis and called on her to reset US policy in the region.
“Emgage Action asked Vice President Harris to impress upon President Biden the urgency of bringing an immediate end to the violence [in Gaza and Lebanon]”, Alzayat said.
“She agrees that this war needs to end.”
