The World Bank is donating 25 million dollars (about three thousand crores) to Bangladesh so that they can cover the damage caused by the recent floods.
Financial adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed said this to reporters after meeting with vice president of the organization Martin Riser on the sidelines of the organization's ongoing annual meeting at the headquarters of the World Bank in Washington.
Meanwhile, on the same day, the adviser also met with US State Department officials and later Indian Finance Minister Nirlma Shitram. In the meeting, they discussed about business and trade, development of bilateral relations, development of relations with the interim government.
According to the Department of State, Bangladesh has to wait longer to get the special duty-free export facility Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) in the US market. But the United States will stand by the interim government. The country has also assured Bangladesh of all kinds of cooperation.
Finance Adviser and Bangladesh Bank Governor are meeting with various countries and development aid organizations on the sidelines by attending the annual conference of the World Bank Group. Later, in a briefing at the office of Bangladesh's alternate executive to the World Bank, the United States said they’re not satisfied with Bangladesh's progress on some other issues, including labor rights. They want to see more progress on these issues.
“We have said that we are improving step by step in these sectors. Some more time is required in place of labor and manpower,” said US authority.
The finance advisor said that the expectations to the interim government from the development partners in this conference are a little higher, however, They have assured us to help in all kinds of reformation activities.
