The interim government has officially inaugurated a farm-to-market initiative in two egg wholesale markets in the capital for bringing eggs directly from the stores of smallholders and big producing companies to the markets bypassing middlemen.
The scheme was announced on Tuesday but officially launched at 4:00 a.m Thursday to ensure that each farm egg is sold at Tk12 to end consumers.
Md Alim Akhter Khan, director general of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, inaugurated the initiative at Kaptan Bazar in the capital.
Initially, 20 lakh pieces of farm eggs would be supplied to Tejgaon and Kaptan Bazars.
To ensure the scheme's success, all the stakeholders in the poultry industry, including big corporations like Kazi Farms and Paragon Poultry, have been brought under a single platform named Bangladesh Poultry Industries Coordination Committee (BPICC).
The scheme would be gradually expanded across the country.
