Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur has estimated that around Tk2 lakh crore is needed to fill the liquidity gap in the banking sector caused by the looting and laundering of funds, reports Daily Sun.
“As a result of looting, we will have to print at least Tk2 lakh crore to ensure the supply of capital,” he told reporters after emerging from a meeting held with the Association of Bankers Bangladesh (ABB) in Dhaka on Wednesday.
However, the BB governor cautioned that printing money would not be wise given the current inflationary pressures.
The local assets of the looters and launderers of bank funds will be identified, and the looted money will be recovered through the sale of these properties, he said.
