A wild elephant, which had been stuck in the mud for nearly 9 hours in Chattogram's Banshkhali upazila, was successfully rescued after continuous efforts by villagers and forest department officials.
The rescue operation began around 8 am on Thursday, following reports that the elephant had become trapped in the mud at the Chunti wildlife sanctuary in the Napora area the previous evening. According to Anisuzzaman Sheikh, Ranger of the Jaldee Range of the Forest Department, the team worked relentlessly alongside at least 35 villagers to free the animal.
The operation involved spraying water on the elephant’s skin to remove the mud and soften it, which eventually allowed the team to raise the animal. The elephant, believed to be around 40 years old, was found to be malnourished and weakened further by its time stuck in the mud.
After the rescue, the elephant was provided with saline water to help its recovery. Due to its inability to stand, veterinary doctors have been requested to provide assistance from the Dulahazara Safari Park.
