Dhaka has ranked sixth on the list of cities with the worst air quality with an AQI index of 216 at 09:21 am today (Jan 2), reports UNB.
Dhaka’s air was classified as 'very unhealthy', according to the air quality and pollution city ranking.
Bosnia & Herzegovina's Sarajevo, Vietnam's Hanoi and Pakistan's Karachi occupied the first and second spots in the list, with AQI scores of 289, 266 and 258, respectively.
An AQI ranging from 151 to 200 is classified as 'unhealthy,' while an AQI of 201 to 300 is considered 'very unhealthy.' An AQI between 301 and 400 is deemed 'hazardous,' presenting severe health risks to residents.
The AQI informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is and what associated health effects might be a concern for them.
The AQI in Bangladesh is based on five pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone.
Dhaka has long been grappling with air pollution issues. Its air quality usually turns unhealthy in winter and improves during the monsoon.
