Clashes between followers of Maulana Saad and Zubair factions of the Tabligh Jamaat over the occupation of the Bishwa Ijtema grounds in Tongi, Gazipur, spread to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday after some injured were brought to the hospital’s emergency department for treatment, reports Dhaka Tribune.
The skirmish on the DMCH premises ensued soon after one person was declared dead by the attending doctors.
To prevent any untoward incidents, army, RAB, and police personnel were deployed at the hospital.
According to reports, when the injured were brought to DMCH from Tongi, Belal Hossain, 60, was declared dead by doctors.
Meanwhile, among the injured, one individual is on life support in the emergency department.
The supporters of the two factions clashed several times inside the hospital premises from morning until 11:30am.
Inspector Md Faruq of DMCH police outpost said that so far, 40 injured individuals from the Tongi clashes have been brought to the hospital.
Clashes erupted between supporters of Maulana Zubair and Maulana Saad over the control of Tongi's Bishwa Ijtema grounds early in the day, leaving two dead and many others injured.
The deceased were Bachchu Mia, 70, hailing from Pakundia upazila of Kishoreganj, and Belal Hossain, 60, from Dakshinkhan in Dhaka.
