Affidavits show large assets of NCP leaders

The National Citizens Party (NCP), formed less than a year ago, has drawn attention after election affidavits revealed substantial assets declared by several of its senior leaders contesting the 13th parliamentary elections. Many of the candidates completed their education only recently and are entering parliamentary politics for the first time.

Among them, the convener of the party, Nahid Islam, introduced himself as a consultant and declared assets of more than 32 lakh taka. And the assets declared by the chief coordinator Hannan Masud are 18 times more than his father's assets. The chief organizer of the southern region, Hasnat Abdullah, has shown gold worth 26 lakh taka and cash worth 13 lakh taka in the bank. Another chief organizer, Sarjis Alam, also has assets of more than 33 lakh taka. This information has been revealed from reports sent by our own correspondents and representatives.

At the time of filing the nomination papers, the candidate is obliged to provide 10 types of information in the affidavit. The affidavit has already been published on the Election Commission's website. If false information is proven in the affidavit, the law provides for cancellation of membership even after the vote.

NCP convener Nahid Islam has no immovable assets, no cases in his name. He also stated in the affidavit that he has a bank loan of Tk 3 lakh along with assets of Tk 32 lakh. The 27-year-old leader has shown his profession as a consultant.

Earlier, he served as an advisor in the interim government for six months. He has shown an annual income of Tk 16 lakh. In the 2024-2025 fiscal year, Nahid paid income tax of Tk 1 lakh 13 thousand against an income of more than Tk 13 lakh. Nahid has presented this information in the affidavit filed with the nomination paper to contest the 13th parliamentary election from Dhaka-11 constituency.

In the affidavit, Nahid's permanent address is Bara Beraid, Badda, Dhaka North City. He lives in Dakshin Banasree of ​​South City. Nahid has jewelry worth Tk 8.5 lakh and his wife has jewelry worth Tk 10 lakh.

NCP member secretary Akhtar Hossain is contesting the election from Rangpur-4 (Kaunia-Pirgachha) constituency. According to the affidavit submitted to the election office, Akhtar Hossain does not own a car or house. However, his movable assets are worth Tk 2.7 million and his wife's are worth Tk 1.6 million. He has Tk 1.3 million in cash. His wife Sanjida Akhtar has Tk 4 million. He has Tk 2.99 million in bank deposits. The affidavit lists Akhtar Hossain as a 'training lawyer' and his wife as a 'housewife'.

According to the information mentioned in the affidavit, Akhtar Hossain's annual income from agriculture, business and employment is Tk 5.05 million. He and his wife have Tk 7 million in jewelry. 10 million in immovable assets include 18 percent agricultural land, the current value of which is Tk 23,000.

Meanwhile, NCP Chief Coordinator Hannan Masud has submitted his nomination papers for Noakhali-6 (Hatia) constituency. His father Amirul Islam Mohammad Abdul Malek has also filed his nomination papers for this constituency. He has participated in the election for the Bangladesh Supreme Party, which has suddenly come into discussion in the 2024 national elections. This information has been obtained from the affidavit submitted. It can be seen that Hannan Masud currently has Tk 3.5 million and his father Amirul Islam Mohammad Abdul Malek has Tk 1.93 lakh. Accordingly, Hannan Masud has 18 times more money than his father.

In the affidavit, Hannan Masud has introduced himself as a businessman. He has shown himself as an Alim (Higher Secondary Equivalent) pass and the owner of a business called Digilant Global in Dhaka. His annual income is shown as Tk 6.7 million. He has Tk 1,055 in deposits in banks and financial institutions.

NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari is running from Dhaka-8 constituency. He has already submitted his affidavit to the Election Commission on the occasion of the election. In the affidavit, Nasiruddin Patwari and his wife have given an account of gold ornaments worth a total of Tk 22 lakh. The affidavit shows that Nasiruddin Patwari has Tk 25 lakh in cash.

In addition, the husband and wife have Tk 22 lakh in jewelry together. Patwari has mentioned marketing consultancy as his profession in the affidavit. He does not have any house or apartment in his name. He has shown an annual income of Tk 2 lakh 2 thousand from his profession. He has shown an annual income of Tk 2 lakh 45 thousand 333 from his job. He has Tk 25 lakh in cash and Tk 5 lakh in his wife's name. The affidavit also shows that Nasiruddin Patwari has Tk 8 thousand 275 deposited in the bank, but Tk 6 lakh 19 thousand 980 in his wife's name.

Sarjis Alam, the NCP's northern chief organizer, is contesting the elections from Panchagarh-1 constituency. He has shown his annual income of Tk 9 lakh. He has shown assets of Tk 33 lakh 73 thousand in his affidavit. According to the affidavit, Sarjis Alam has cash of 3 lakh 11 thousand 128 taka. The amount of money deposited in banks and financial institutions is 1 lakh taka. The amount of donated agricultural land is 16.50 percent. The value of which was 7 thousand 500 taka at the time of acquisition; which is currently approximately 5 lakh taka. His annual income from business is 9 lakh taka. He has mentioned a master's degree as his highest educational qualification.

Hasnat Abdullah, the chief organizer of the NCP southern region in Cumilla-4 constituency. He has given a complete description of his financial condition in his election affidavit. He has a total of 50 lakh taka in movable and immovable assets. He has 26 lakh taka in gold and 13.5 lakh taka in cash in his bank. He has mentioned business as his profession. After reviewing the information in the affidavit, it was found that he does not have any house, car, apartment or building in his name. However, his annual income is 12 lakh 53 thousand 539 taka. He has 13 lakh 50 thousand taka in cash.

Tasneem Zara, who recently resigned from the NCP, is an independent candidate from Dhaka-9 constituency. According to the affidavit, Zara has assets of 19 lakh taka. She earns 7 lakh taka from her job annually. She mentioned this information in the affidavit submitted with her nomination paper to the returning officer. Tasneem Zara's annual income is 7 lakh 13 thousand 597 taka, assets are 19 lakh 13 thousand 509 taka, and she has paid income tax of 34 thousand 57 taka. She has no cases, loans, liabilities or government dues. She does not own a house, flat, agricultural or non-agricultural land. She has ornaments worth 2.5 lakh taka. She has 10 thousand 19 taka in her name in the bank, 16 lakh taka in cash and 2 thousand 270 British pounds.

NCP candidates have submitted their nomination papers in 3 out of the 6 constituencies in Sylhet district. According to the information given in the affidavit, all three candidates are highly educated. Two of them have relatively low assets and income, but one is a millionaire. Both have sources of income in the country and abroad.

From the affidavit of Ehteshamul Haque, the NCP candidate in Sylhet-1 constituency, was a dual citizen. He renounced his UK citizenship on October 22 this year. Ehteshamul Haque, a master's pass holder, is a consultant by profession. He was also an official in the local government of the UK. His wife Sabina Akhter is a community councilor cabinet member in the UK by profession.

Ehteshamul's annual income within the country is 3 lakh 80 thousand taka and his income outside the country is 6 lakh taka. His wife's annual income outside the country is 4 million taka. She also has a car worth 1 million taka in her name. Ehteshamul has 3.5 lakh taka in cash and 8 lakh 10 thousand taka in the bank. He has furniture worth 3 lakh taka in his name and 5 lakh taka in his wife's name. In the affidavit, Ehteshamul mentioned the acquisition and current value of his movable assets as 14 lakh 60 thousand taka. And the value of his wife's movable assets is Tk 15 lakh.

Barrister Nurul Huda Juned, the NCP candidate for Sylhet-3 constituency, was once in the UK. He returned to the country after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. Juned, a trainee lawyer by profession, has an LLM educational qualification.

His wife Tanzina Shaheed is a doctor by profession. In the affidavit, Nurul Huda Juned has mentioned his annual income as Tk 6 lakh. Of this, Tk 1 lakh 20 thousand is from the agricultural sector, Tk 1 lakh 20 thousand from the legal profession and Tk 3 lakh 60 thousand from other sectors. He has Tk 50 thousand in cash and Tk 80 thousand in the bank. He has a car worth Tk 10 lakh, 10 gold bars, electronic products worth Tk 2 lakh and furniture worth Tk 1.5 lakh. Barrister Juned has mentioned that the current value of the movable assets of Tk 14 lakh 80 thousand at the time of acquisition is Tk 2 lakh 80 thousand.

NCP candidate for Sylhet-4 constituency Md. Rashel ul Alam is an IT developer by profession. He also once lived in the United States with his family. Ranu Begum, an expatriate in the United States, is a businesswoman there.

Rashel's annual income within the country is Tk 48 lakh and outside the country is Tk 62 lakh. His wife's annual income outside the country is Tk 30 lakh. Rashel has no money in the bank, but has Tk 39 lakh 63 thousand 650 in cash. His wife and dependents have Tk 40 lakh in cash. He has 10 bhoris of gold, electronic products worth Tk 4 lakh and furniture worth Tk 4 lakh. The acquisition and current value of Rashel's immovable assets is Tk 51 lakh 63 thousand 650. Apart from this, the immovable assets include 60 decimal non-agricultural land worth 1 crore 13 lakh 78 thousand 800 taka and a house worth 1 crore 10 lakh 43 thousand 885 taka. In the affidavit, Rashel mentioned the acquisition and current value of his immovable assets as 2 crore 24 lakh 22 thousand 285 taka.
