A thousand-crore empire built on Tk80,000 salary!

A thousand-crore empire built on Tk80,000 salary!

His name is Harun Or Rashid, but everyone knows him as DB Harun. On paper, he was a police officer. His responsibility was to ensure the safety of people's lives and property. But Harun is perhaps the best example of the monster that develops when the protector becomes the devourer. His lifetime income from his job cannot cross Tk6 crore. But he and his family members have assets worth thousands of crore taka. Harun was a robber and a scoundrel in the guise of a police officer, said sources.

He built up a mountain of wealth by cheating and intimidating people. This corrupt former police officer, who is currently living in the United States, has assets worth thousands of crore taka in his own country.

Born in Hossainpur village of Ghagra union in Mithamoin upazila of Kishoreganj, Harun Or Rashid got a job under the Freedom Fighter quota in 1996 during the Awami League government. It was later learned that his father was a fake freedom fighter. The BNP government blocked his appointment in 2001. His job became permanent during the 1/11 regime.

The salary of this Additional Commissioner (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), who was last ranked as Deputy Inspector General, was around Tk80,000 according to the government scale.

According to information received from various sources, he has assets in Uttara, Gazipur, Kishoreganj and even in the United States. The value of these assets is more than Tk1,000 crore.

He has more than two dozen houses and flats in Uttara alone. He has an office in Uttara to look after all these. All the assets there are controlled by his so-called “uncle” Jahangir Alam. Harun has also built up a lot of wealth in his name.

It is alleged that most of his assets were seized through force and by putting the owner in a difficult situation. Among his Uttara houses, there are six houses and a market in Sector 3 alone.

He and his family lived in a house on Road 20, Sector 3 in Uttara. They lived on the fourth floor of an eight-story building. Harun's six-story house on the same road was used as a guest house.

He built a ten-storey market in the name of his father-in-law on a 10-katha plot in holding number 5 on road number 7 in Uttara Sector 3. He has a 7-katha commercial plot in holding number 1 on road number 9 and a 14-storey commercial building in holding number 23 on road number 15 in Uttara.

There is information that Harun sold plot number 14 on road number 9 in the same sector for Tk32 crore. And it is known that he rented plot number 41, a 7-katha plot in Rabindra Sarani, for Tk14 lakh per month.

He has two 10-katha plots in holdings 29 and 30 on Road 6, Sector 5. One of them has a tin shed and the other has a warehouse.

Harun has a 5-katha plot in holding number 39 on road number 11 in sector 10 in Uttara . Harun's office is on the fifth floor of house number 4 on road number 12 in the same sector. All his property documents are kept here.

Harun owns a 5-katha plot next to Uttara Smriti Cable TV Limited in Sector 11. It is rented out to a company called Star Car Selection.

There is a six-story house at number 21, Sonargaon Janpath Road, Sector 12, Uttara. Harun took a loan from Shahjalal Islami Bank by mortgaging it.

Harun also has three plots in Sector 13 in Uttara. He rented Plot 12 on Shah Makhdum Avenue with a few shops including Taj Food Court and. plot 79 on Sonargaon Janpath Road. And Harun has a six-storey building in Plot 49 on Road 3 there.

Harun has two plots in Uttara Sector 14. Plots 17 and 19 on Road 20 are rented out as showrooms for four companies.

It is also reported that Harun has dozens of flats in Sector 13, next to Zamzam Tower, Uttara Phase III and Purbachal.

It is alleged that Harun occupied a 20-katha plot next to the Banani Cemetery and sold it to a company for Tk70 crore.

A residential hotel is being built on 12 bighas of land inside the Chhayakunj-5 residential project in Gushulia Mouza of Tongi. All these are reportedly connected to Harun.

Harun is accused of harassing numerous people during his tenure in Gazipur. There are many allegations that he played a role in land grabbing on behalf of various groups and leaders and activists of the ruling party. Through this, he illegally earned crores of taka.

Harun Or Rashid is the owner of the Tkl100-crore Taka President Resort in Mithamoin, Kishoreganj. His brother Dr Shahriar runs it. Harun is accused of grabbing the land of many people in the construction of this luxurious resort built on 30 acres of land.

Harun has shares in two luxury resorts in Gazipur, namely Sabuj Pata Resort and Green Tech. Harun's wife is the MD of a company called American Dairy, in which Harun has mainly invested. A company called JH-Geotex Limited is being built on 8 bighas of land in Sataish Mouza of Tongi without any permission. A residential hotel is being built on 12 bighas of land inside the Chhayakunj-5 residential project in Gushulia Mouza of Tongi. Soil has already been dumped.

It is alleged that while he was the Superintendent of Police in Gazipur, Harun was friends with Kamruzzaman alias Kamrul alias Mauchha Kamrul of that area. This Superintendent of Police was Kamrul's protector. He has shares in Sabuj Pata Resort and another luxury resort called Green Tech in Gazipur. Apart from this, Harun also has shares in Nandan Park. He has an investment in a company called American Dairy. The MD of this company is Harun's wife. Harun also has a joint business of fisheries and restaurants with Anis, a former lawmaker from Trishal, Mymensingh.

ACC sources said complaints were filed with the ACC against former DMP Additional Commissioner and former DB Chief Mohammad Harun Or Rashid in July 2023. But Harun did not allow those complaints to be investigated. After the 5 August uprising, the ACC began investigating Harun's illegal assets. The investigation initially revealed the truth of Harun's corruption.
