The price of vegetables has been soaring high recklessly. Almost every item is out of reach of common buyers. There’s no veg items in the kitchen market right now that costs below Tk 80. In addition, the price of fish, chicken, eggs, onions, retail flour and pulses are much higher than it was earlier. The consumers are very tensed due to extreme high prices of food commodities.
On Thursday, a visit to the capital's Mohakhali Raw Market, Mirpur Kazipara, Joarsahara and Badda Raw Markets showed that the supply of vegetables is quite low compared to the demand in the current market. Due to this, prices have increased compared to the previous one. At the same time, the prices of fish, chicken and chicken eggs have also increased.
In the retail market of the capital, round brinjal is being sold at Tk 140 to Tk 200 taka per kg, depending on the quality, and long brinjal is being sold at Tk 80 to Tk 100 per kg.
In addition, gourd and patol are being sold at Tk 80 to Tk 100, bitter gourd at Tk 100 to Tk 120, kakarol at Tk 100, carrot at Tk 140, barbati at Tk 100 to Tk 120, cucumber at Tk 80, shrimp at Tk 80 to 100, dhundal at Tk 90 to Tk 100, chichinga at Tk 80, tomato at Tk 160 to Tk 180, new beans at Tk 220 to Tk 240, green chilli at Tk 160 to Tk 200, and papaya at Tk 40 taka per kg. Chal pumpkin costs Tk 70 to 80 per piece, long gourd Tk 80 to 90.
Akhter Hossain, a buyer at Mohakhali Raw Market, said, "When the price of fish and meat increases, the common man depends on eggs and vegetables. But fish, meat, eggs and vegetables are all out of reach in the market. Where will we go now? The common man is in great trouble in the current situation. The government should pay attention to quick market supervision."
Md. Harun, a vegetable seller at Badda Market, said, "This time, due to continuous rains, farmers' vegetable fields have suffered a lot due to which the prices have increased due to the low supply of vegetables in the markets.For this, there is a supply crisis in the market. As a result, vegetables have to be bought at double the price than before."
He also said that buyers have reduced their vegetable purchases due to the increase in prices. Chicken and eggs are still high.Chicken and eggs are still being sold at the previous high prices. Broiler chicken is at Tk 170 to Tk 180 per kg, sonali chicken is at Tk 300 to Tk 320 per kg depending on the quality. A dozen farm chicken eggs cost Tk 140 to Tk 150.
A visit to the market showed that the price of retail flour has increased in the market for two weeks and is being sold at retail at Tk 50 per kg. However, packet flour is still at the previous price. With the increase in price, local lentils are being sold at Tk 160 per kg, which had been stable at Tk 140 in the market for a long time. The price of garlic in the market is now slightly lower. Imported garlic is being sold at Tk 160 to Tk 180 per kg and local garlic at Tk 120 to Tk 130. Small local garlic is being sold at Tk 100 taka per kg.
