As part of massive surveillance, a staggering 1.5 lakh phone calls were recorded in a single year during the regime of the Awami League government.
Sensitive phone calls of political figures or those considered a threat to the government were intercepted and leaked on social media and other platforms, and this operation was carried out by National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC) former director general Maj Gen (sacked) Ziaul Ahsan.
Reliable sources from the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology have confirmed the matter.
Officially, the issue has recently been reported to the UN Human Rights Commission, which expressed shock over the revelations, according to sources.
A senior policymaker affiliated with the ministry said these phone calls were recorded, violating rules, only to cling to power.
Anyone who opposed or held differing views from the Awami League government had their calls monitored, and a dedicated team worked on this round the clock, the official said.
Ziaul faces allegations of leaking private phone calls of leaders from the BNP and other opposition parties as well as broadcasting them on various television channels.
