15th founding anniversary of the Kaler Kantho

Bangladesh to be happy, prosperous and peaceful

Md. Alamgir Islam
Bangladesh to be happy, prosperous and peaceful

We, the students, are the future of the nation. Our thoughts and opinions today will shape the Bangladesh of tomorrow. Therefore, I envision a Bangladesh where development, good governance, and equal rights for all are ensured. This Bangladesh will be happy, prosperous, and peaceful, with the fundamental rights of all citizens protected.

Firstly, a change in state power is extremely necessary. Our country's politics is still largely confined to personality worship, and state decisions are made for party interests. I desire thorough reforms in state power in the coming days. Public representatives should become true servants of the people, and strict laws should be enacted to prevent the abuse of power.

In this regard, increasing direct public participation is essential. Through fair and impartial voting, people should be able to elect their representatives and hold the government accountable.

Secondly, some changes are needed in our constitution. The current constitution, in many cases, fails to meet the demands of the modern era. Specifically, clearer guidelines and protections must be ensured concerning human rights and civil liberties. Amendments should be introduced to the constitution to enhance judicial independence, freedom of the press, and the importance of public opinion. New provisions should be added to ensure transparency and efficiency within law enforcement agencies.

Thirdly, the electoral system is crucial for a strong democracy. Irregularities, vote rigging, intimidation, and partisan revenge still dominate during elections, posing a threat to democracy. I advocate for comprehensive reforms in the electoral system. The Election Commission should be strengthened and made more independent, enabling commissioners to conduct free and fair elections without political pressure. Measures should be in place to allow citizens to exercise their voting rights freely, ensuring every vote is valued.

The future Bangladesh will be a country where equal opportunities exist for all citizens. Education, healthcare, employment, housing, and security will be guaranteed. The state will be committed to respect for the people, human rights, and social justice. As a modern, technology-dependent, and environmentally friendly nation, Bangladesh will strengthen its position globally.

Change must occur not only politically but also socially and culturally. There will be no discrimination based on religion, race, ethnicity, or community, and everyone will come together to build the nation—we aspire to see such a Bangladesh.

The realisation of this dream is possible if we all work together to make our state's structure more democratic, well-governed, and humane.

The article was published on the occasion of the 15th founding anniversary of the popular Bengali daily Kaler Kantho. The writer is a student of the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
