Despite law enforcement agencies’ drives, the law and order situation remained out of control, resulting in insecurity among country people.

Criminals are establishing the state of terror in society under various pretexts and attacking ordinary people – sometimes with firearms.

Many firearms-wounds have died before even taking to hospitals. Even, Police member are not spared from their attacks.

The continuity of the situation is causing anxiety and worry among people from all walks of the county.

Those concerned said: “A large number of weapons and ammunition are scattered in different parts of the country, as the weapons and ammunition looted from the police and law enforcement agencies have not yet been recovered.”

On the other hand, many of the ‘identified’ criminals are currently in the shelter of people with power. The situation won’t improve till the law enforcement agencies become fully functional.

Home adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said: “Police members are ready to face not only national parliament elections but also any circumstances as they started working full-fledged.”

But, crime analyst and Human Rights Support Society adviser Nur Khan Liton says something else. He yesterday told Bangladesh Pratidin: “The criminals are taking the advantages as police have not been able to turn around.”

“Though the Army members are working in the field, there is a kind of inertia among them.”

He identifies this as a problem, he said: “Because of inertia, even when the army goes to an area, the people there are not behaving them from quarrel, resulting in insecurity among common people.”

In response to a question, he said: “The law enforcement agencies should be stricter in light of law as the situation has changed a lot.”

He suggested for a ‘Joint Drive’ to give the message to the society – the criminals will not be overlooked regarding anything.

Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Chatradal leader Humayun Kabir [26] was shot and killed by assailants while playing badminton in Narsingdi. The incident occurred around 11:30 pm on Saturday in the Panchdona area of the sadar upazila. Doctors said the deceased was shot in the chest and head.

On the same day, a police constable named Ruhul Amin Rubel [38], who was on leave, was shot by his opponents in Gazaria, Munshiganj, over a past feud. After shooting, the criminals threw him into water and fled.

Later, he was rescued in critical condition and rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospitals.

Ruhul’s father Abdul Haque said: “We have dispute with our neighbor Chunnu.”

On Saturday, at around 11:30 pm Chunnu, his younger brother Manik, Babu, Awami League leader Taifur of Imampur village and a few others suddenly attacked on Ruhul when he was sitting on a loft next to his house, Mr Haque recounts.

“At a point, they started shooting, and threw him into the pond and fled.”

Gazaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Aminul Islam confirmed the incident and said: “We are investigating the matter.”

The above two brutal incidents took place within a 24-hour period. Such incidents are becoming common across the country including the capital.

On 7th December night, three people were shot in two separate incidents in the capital’s Kadamtali and Badda areas. Police say that two security guards of a rod-making factory in the Kadamtali area, Md Monir [45] and Md Al Amin [40], were shot by miscreants. A security guard named Saiful Islam [32] was shot in Badda.

Rezaul Karim Mallik, Additional Commissioner of DMP, tells Bangladesh Pratidin of a special team formation to prevent theft, robbery and extortion. He said: “Will see the results soon.”

Sources from police headquarters said that 5,750 firearms and 651,609 ammunitions were looted from various police stations and outposts after the fall of Sheikh Hasina.

The looted firearms and ammunition include various types of rifles, SMGs (small machine guns), LMGs (light machine guns), pistols, shotguns, gas guns, tear gas launchers, tear gas shells, tear gas sprays, sound grenades and bullets of various bores. A joint operation to recover the looted firearms and ammunition began on September 4.

Police headquarters says that 4,351 firearms and 388,456 pieces of ammunition were recovered in this operation till December 22.

Regarding the recent issues, Enamul Haque Sagar, Assistant Inspector General of Police said: “Police are investigating each and every incident with great seriousness. Those involve in crime have also been brought under the law.”

He said police is using its maximum effort to arrest other involves.

The Crime Analysts say that in the context of country, it is not possible to completely close crimes, but it is possible to control it.

They say: “There is still a lack of coordination among the police at the field level.”

However, Police said that the type of crime is not always at the same level. No matter how the crime is committed, the job of the police is to control crime. The police are doing their job.
