Emeritus Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury said, "There has been no change in the character of the state. If a monkey wears human clothes, does it become a human? The state remains that same monkey; only its attire has changed. There has been no true transformation in the state."
On Sunday, at a discussion meeting titled "The Role of Leftists in the '24' Uprising and Their Responsibilities" held at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Miah Hall of the National Press Club on the seventh death anniversary of Comrade AFM Mahbubul Haque, Emeritus Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury made these remarks as the keynote speaker.
Abu Saeed Khan chaired the event. The AFM Mahbubul Haque Smriti Sangsad organized the program.
Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury said, "The recent uprising is not a revolution. It marks the downfall of an extreme fascist government. This downfall could have occurred through elections. Had that been the case, those now in hiding would not have needed to flee; they would have survived. However, because they rejected that possibility, this uprising took place. It is the collapse of a fascist regime. Today, capitalism has taken on the form of fascism globally."
In the discussion, Professor Anu Muhammad stated, "It is the financing from the World Bank, IMF, and ADB that has led to rising inequality in Bangladesh and the commercialization of education and healthcare. At the same time, our energy and power sectors are facing severe challenges. If the World Bank and IMF continue to wield their influence, and if this government still places its trust in them and considers restructuring the economy, then where is the change? The desire and potential for change does exist, and part of it lies with the people."
Mujahidul Islam Selim, former president of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), said, "An unnecessary debate is being created among the people. The movement of '24' is not a revolution; it is an uprising."
