Bashundhara Shuvosangho activists distributed free saplings among more than a hundred members from ethnic minority communities at Ward No 9, Birganj municipality, Dinajpur on Wednesday.
Saplings of flame tree, hog plum tree, jackfruit tree, and different other species of fruit trees, forest trees and herbal trees were distributed.
On the occasion, Shuvosangho activists also delivered speeches to raise awareness about forestation and climate change impact.
BNP’s Birganj town unit president, Md Amirul Bahar, was present as the chief guest at the event.
He said that climate change has become a major global challenge, adding that in this backdrop, there is not alternative to expand forest areas. Increased tree coverage also helps maintain environmental balance, and reduces natural disaster impacts.
Every citizen should plant at least one tree, the BNP leader said.
One sapling recipient, Bashonti Hemrom, said Shuvosangho’s gift for her will benefit her family in the future, while also helping to beautify and conserve the nature.
Others present at the event said planting trees and plants is not enough to protect the environment and reduce climate change risks. Rather, each new sapling and tree must be nurtured properly, they added.
