The holy Eid-ul-Azha is being celebrated across the country on Thursday, carrying the message of sacrifice, equality, and brotherhood.
Ahead of the festival, heavy pressure from homebound travelers was seen on the Jamuna Bridge and its connecting highways over the past several days.
Despite the massive traffic flow throughout the Eid journey period, authorities managed vehicle movement efficiently, collecting a total of Tk20 crore in tolls from the bridge over six days.
According to data from the Jamuna Bridge Site Office and the Bangladesh Bridge Authority, a total of 262,908 vehicles crossed the bridge from both ends between Friday and Wednesday. During the same period, total toll collection reached Tk204,144,550.
On Wednesday alone, 32,907 vehicles crossed through the eastern end of the bridge, while 12,986 vehicles used the western end. In total, 45,889 vehicles crossed the bridge within 24 hours, generating toll revenue of Tk 33.47 million.
Earlier, on Tuesday (26 May), 56,239 vehicles crossed the bridge in 24 hours, with toll collection reaching Tk 38.29 million. On Monday (25 May), 53,246 vehicles crossed the bridge, generating Tk 37.75 million in toll revenue.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, tolls worth Tk 32.51 million were collected from 39,919 vehicles, while on Saturday, 32,649 vehicles crossed the bridge, generating Tk 29.66 million in tolls.
On the first day of the Eid journey, Friday , 34,966 vehicles used the bridge, and toll collection stood at Tk 32.43 million.
Authorities said that despite the peak Eid travel rush, prolonged severe congestion was rarely seen on the Sirajganj highway on the western side of the bridge. They credited the smooth traffic management to the four-lane highway and the operational Hatikumrul Interchange, which helped ease pressure from the additional vehicles.
