Bangladesh and the Netherlands are moving to strengthen strategic cooperation in the maritime and logistics sectors with a focus on building sustainable transport systems, modern port connectivity, and a globally competitive shipbuilding industry.
The commitment was reaffirmed on Monday during a high-level meeting between the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and a Dutch delegation at BIDA conference room in the city, said a press release.
During the meeting, both sides discussed leveraging Dutch expertise in port-centric development and logistics to support Bangladesh's growing maritime ambitions.
The meeting was chaired by BIDA Executive Member Air Commodore (Retd) Md Shahrurul Huda.
The Netherlands delegation was led by Charge d'Affaires of the Netherlands Embassy in Dhaka Koos Dijkstra and included senior representatives from Nestra B.V., a company specializing in sustainable transport and logistics solutions.
Senior officials from the Public Private Partnership Authority (PPPA), the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), and the Maheshkhali Integrated Development Authority (MIDA) also attended the meeting, reflecting a coordinated national effort to integrate industrial zones with advanced maritime infrastructure and deep-sea port connectivity.
During the discussions, both sides emphasized the importance of developing modern shipbuilding and maintenance facilities capable of meeting international standards.
They also highlighted the need to transform Bangladesh's ship recycling sector into a safer and more environmentally sustainable industry in line with global protocols.
The talks further focused on expanding maritime, coastal, and inland water transport networks to better utilize Bangladesh's vast river systems for cargo movement and trade facilitation.
Participants noted that improved inland connectivity could significantly reduce logistics costs and enhance supply chain efficiency.
Port connectivity emerged as another major area of cooperation, with officials stressing the importance of linking ports more effectively with inland destinations and industrial hubs to reduce transit times and improve competitiveness.
The meeting also underscored the importance of knowledge-sharing and technical cooperation.
Both sides discussed creating opportunities for training, research, and the transfer of Dutch maritime expertise to strengthen local institutional and workforce capacity.
A key highlight of the dialogue was BIDA's strategic vision to establish "Smart and Green Logistics Corridors" aimed at modernizing Bangladesh's logistics ecosystem through sustainable infrastructure, technological innovation, and integrated transport planning.
Officials said the proposed initiative seeks to align economic zones, ports, and industrial development under a more efficient and environmentally responsible logistics framework.
The involvement of agencies such as BEZA and MIDA is expected to ensure closer coordination between industrial expansion and maritime connectivity projects.
The session concluded with a mutual commitment to continue engaging with stakeholders from both countries to transform the strategic priorities into concrete projects and long-term maritime advancements.
