Bangladesh is likely to experience one or two severe heat waves in the current month, according to Met office, reports UNB.

In its long-range weather outlook for April, Bangladesh Meteorological Department said that 2-4 mild (36-38.9) degree Celsius or moderate (38-39.9) degree Celsius and 1-2 severe (40-41.9) degree Celsius heat waves are likely over the country this month.

Rainfall is likely to be below normal over the country, it said.

Besides, 1 to 2 Low Pressure Systems are likely to form over the Bay of Bengal and one of them may intensify into a depression or cyclone.

It also predicted 5-7 days light or moderate thunderstorms with hail and 1-3 days of severe thunderstorms with hail at places over the country during the period.

Day and night temperature is likely to be above normal over the country.

A meeting was held with an expert team for providing Long Range Weather Forecast on 27 March at Storm Warning Centre, Dhaka with a hybrid platform, it said.

BMD forecast weather of April after appropriate analysis of weather observations, weather pattern of upper level, different types of atmospheric weather chart, climate model, SOI (El Nino & La Nino condition) and the weather forecast of April 2025 from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recognised institutes, Global Producing Centers (GPCs), ECMWF, JMA, NOAA, IRI-Columbia University, APEC Climate Centre (APCC), RIMES and C3S etc, it added.

The water levels of the rivers in the northeastern region of the country may increase rapidly due to moderate to heavy rainfall in the northeastern region and adjacent catchment areas during second half of this month.

The water flow of the main rivers may be normal elsewhere over the country, said the Met office.

Bangladesh, already grappling with a range of climate-induced challenges, now faces heightened risks from intensifying heat waves.

In 2024, heat waves with temperatures soaring above 42°C have forced authorities to shut down schools nationwide, affecting the education of an estimated 33 million children.
