A court has annulled the results of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election held on February 1, 2020. At the same time, the court has declared BNP-nominated candidate Ishraque Hossain as the mayor.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday at around 3 PM by Judge Md Nurul Islam of Dhaka Election Tribunal-15.
In the ruling, the government’s gazette appointing former DSCC mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, who was elected with the "Boat" symbol, was canceled. Simultaneously, the court declared Ishraque Hossain as the mayor.
On March 3, 2020, Ishraque Hossain filed a case seeking the annulment of the DSCC election and its results, citing irregularities, corruption, and lack of acceptability.
The case named eight individuals as defendants, including then-Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, Returning Officer Md. Abdul Baten, and DSCC mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh.
It is worth mentioning that the elections for Dhaka North and South City Corporations were held on February 1, 2020. In that election, Awami League candidates Atiqul Islam and Fazle Noor Taposh were elected as mayors of the North and South, respectively. The Election Commission published the election gazette on February 2, and they were sworn in to assume their duties. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, they were removed from their positions.
