Two teachers of Chittagong University (CU) have been dismissed for not returning after completing their higher study leave abroad.
The decision was made at a syndicate meeting on Wednesday evening, DT reported.
The dismissed teachers are -- Shantanu Dev Barman and Rifat Darina Kamal. Shantanu Dev was an associate professor in the Economics Department, while Rifat Darina was an assistant professor in the Public Administration Department.
University sources said that despite multiple letters urging them to rejoin their teaching positions after their leave ended, the duo did not respond, leading to their dismissal.
CU acting registrar, Professor Mohammad Saiful Islam, said, "We tried to contact them, but they did not respond. They were also allowed to defend themselves. Finally, following the proper procedures, they were removed from their positions."
According to university sources, Shantanu Dev went to Canada in 2017 for a master’s and PhD programme.
His study leave was initially granted from January 4, 2017, to January 3, 2022.
On the other hand, Rifat Darina Kamal took leave in July 2019 for a PhD programme in Canada.
Her leave ended in July 2022.
