A 5.6-magnitude earthquake was felt across Bangladesh, including Dhaka, at 11:36 AM on Wednesday. The tremor originated near the India-Myanmar border, approximately 149 km from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) headquarters.
Md Golam Mostafa, a teleprinter operator at the Seismic Observatory and Research Centre, BMD, confirmed the earthquake’s coordinates at latitude 24.77°N and longitude 94.68°E, placing the epicenter 449 km northeast of BMD’s seismic centre in Agargaon, Dhaka.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) also recorded the quake at a magnitude of 5.6, with its epicenter 29 km from Chongdan, Manipur, India. Tremors were felt across Bangladesh, India, and Myanmar, though the Earthquake Observation and Research Centre in Bangladesh categorized it as moderate. Experts noted that its impact was limited due to the distant epicenter.
However, experts believe it was unlikely to cause structural damage beyond minor incidents, such as objects falling or broken windows.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, though no reports of damage or casualties have emerged. Residents described brief but noticeable shaking, and further updates are expected as assessments continue.
