Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul said, "Six reform commissions have submitted their final reports. They have proposed reforms in three time frames: Immediate, medium-term and long-term reforms. We want to move into the election process as soon as the basic reforms are made for free and fair elections. This government has no desire to stay in power by wasting time. We will start discussions with political parties on the reform reports in the middle of this month.”
He said this at a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Saturday. The Chief Advisor’s press secretary Shafiqul Alam and deputy press secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder were present at the time.
Asif Nazrul said, “Some people mean immediate reforms as things to be done within the next six months. Some people mean that the reforms can be started from tomorrow. However, they certainly think that these reforms need to be done before the next elections. Political consensus will be needed for some immediate issues.”
He said, “There are some proposals that no one should have any objection to. We have done some of these things before the reform proposals came.”
In response to a question, Dr. Asif Nazrul said, “Long-term reforms will be done by the post-election government. We hope that the immediate issues will be done before the elections based on consensus with the political parties. Medium-term reforms will depend on how much the political parties agree. Many reforms have also been done by our political parties. In the last 55 years, political parties have done a lot of good work. We forget them while making their criticism. Every party has ideas for reforms. The proposals of the reform commissions were also within the outline of the three-party alliance. If this doubt is removed among them (political parties) that the reforms are not being done to prolong our stay in power, then many things will be possible to implement.”
He said, “Five commissions have made recommendations for immediate actions. The Constitutional Reform Commission has not made any recommendations for immediate actions as every proposal for constitutional reform will be taken on the basis of consensus with political parties. In many cases, new laws will have to be created. Political consensus will be required on some issues. Some issues will not be like that. We have already foremd some laws.”
