UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has said that the UN fact-finding report on the atrocities committed during the July-August uprising is in its final stages and will be released by mid-February.
The UN High Commissioner made the comments during a meeting with Bangladesh Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday, held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in the Swiss mountain city of Davos.
Türk mentioned that the report would also be shared with the Bangladesh side prior to its publication by the UN rights office in Geneva, reports BSS.
Professor Yunus expressed his gratitude to the UN rights office for investigating the crimes committed during the student-led uprising. He added that reports from the six major independent reform commissions would also be released around the same time, noting that these reports could complement each other.
The chief adviser also urged the UN Human Rights Chief to support efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis, which has worsened in recent months following the arrival of tens of thousands of new refugees from Myanmar.
While assuring his full support, Türk said he was in discussions with relevant stakeholders, including the UN Special Envoy on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, regarding the crisis.
Professor Yunus proposed the creation of an UN-overseen safe zone within Myanmar's Rakhine State to prevent further influxes of Rohingya refugees. He also referred to an upcoming high-level conference on the Rohingya crisis, emphasizing its potential to refocus global attention on one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
Türk agreed on the importance of such a conference to regain the international community's attention on the issue.
Lamiya Morshed, SDG Coordinator for the Bangladesh government, and Tareq Ariful Islam, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to Geneva, also attended the meeting.
