India’s former career diplomat and Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar said that Sheikh Hasina should be allowed to stay in India as she had done a lot for the country.
“The former Prime Minister of Bangladesh should be granted permission to stay in India as long as she wants,” said Shankar.
He made these comments in an interview with news agency PTI at the 16th Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival on Saturday night.
Aiyar expressed his satisfaction over Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri's visit to Dhaka last month, where he held discussions with Bangladesh’s interim government authorities. He stressed that such discussions should continue and that India should establish ministerial-level communication with Bangladesh’s interim government.
Regarding demands for Sheikh Hasina’s extradition from Bangladesh, he said, “It cannot be denied that Sheikh Hasina has done a lot of good work for us. I am happy that she has been given shelter(by India). I believe we should host her as a guest for as long as needed, even if that means her entire lifetime.”
