A firefighter died after being hit by a speedily covered van while working to douse a fire at the Bangladesh Secretariat early Thursday.
The deceased is Sohanur Zaman Nayon, a firefighter from the special branch of Tejgaon Fire Station.
Earlier in the morning, at a press conference, Director General (DG) of the Directorate of Fire Services and Civil Defence Brigadier General Muhammad Zaheed Kamal said a speedily covered van ran over Sohanur Zaman Nayon while he was connecting a water pipe at the pump in front of the Secretariat.
Nayon was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Another firefighter was injured in the incident. But his condition is now stable, said the DG.
Meanwhile, students detained the covered van driver in front of the Public Works building.
The fire that broke out at Building 7 of the Bangladesh Secretariat in the capital’s Segunbagicha area early Thursday has been doused after six hours.
