Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin said on Wednesday that the Election Commission (EC) staff and officials are working with an aim to hold the 13th parliamentary election by December next year.
“The people’s expectations to the government and the Election Commission are very high. I don’t believe there is any situation that could hinder or corrupt the election,” he said in an interview with a private TV channel.
“We will publish a voter list and finish registration works of political parties before September next year and then we will announce the schedule for the 13th parliamentary election,” said the CEC.
The CEC made the statement when the country’s major political parties, especially the BNP, have been calling upon the government to hold the national polls as early as possible after completing some necessary reforms.
Nasir Uddin said his commission has begun works on excluding fake voters, preparing a new voter list and demarcating the electoral constituency even before the Election System Reform Commission submitted its reports.
He expected that the members of law enforcement agencies would work to hold the next general election in a free, fair and transparent manner as they are now out of pressure from any vested quarter.
The law enforcers were under tremendous pressure to ensure the victory of a certain political party, he added.
