ACC Chairman discloses his wealth
Dr. Mohammad Abdul Momen

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Dr. Mohammad Abdul Momen has disclosed his assets and income-liabilities to the media.

“I’ve formally submitted my wealth statement to the ACC Reform Commission. Other commissioners will also submit their asset details,” he said while exchanging views with the media at the ACC Headquarters, Segunbagicha on Sunday afternoon, reports BSS.

Mohammad Abdul Momen joined the ACC on December 11.

According to the asset details the ACC Chairman has two 750 square feet apartments in Basila, totaling 1,500 square feet while process for acquiring another 700 square feet flat is going on. He has a vacant 5 katha plot with his wife in Purbachal American City.

“I was a member of the BCS administration committee. There is a 10-katha of land for eight members. My share will be 1.25 katha. I paid the money in 2007, but I have not get possession yet,” said Dr. Mohammad Abdul Momen.

“I myself deposited Tk 75,000 for a plot in RAJUK. Till date, it has not been settled. For whatever reason, the government has not given it to me. I will apply again. Apart from this, I do not have any other immovable assets,” he continued.

Regarding the immovable assets, the ACC Chairman said, “I have 25 shelves of books of local and foreign, which are quite expensive. There are furniture and electronic items worth about Tk 5 lakh. I have a savings certificate of Tk 30 lakh for a period of five years. And I have a savings certificate of Tk 20 lakh for a period of three months. I have not withdrawn my GPF money, Tk 17 lakh.”

About the income source, he said, “Pays from my job and money from selling inherited assets. I am also involved in teaching, giving lectures and writings. I have got some money after selling a 5.5 decimal of land, which I bought in Chatgaran Bari area outside the embankment.”

He said currently he has around Tk 4.5 lakh in cash as well as in bank.

Noting that he now receives a salary equivalent to a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, the ACC Chairman said, “My working life is long. I started earning when I was student. When I will leave this job, you can evaluate how much this wealth has increased and decreased."

Noting that the Interim Government has been established to look after public expectations, he said, "We are fortunate that we have come at a time when there is no political government. The people have established this government. If this government had not been established, if there had been no August 5 Revolution, we would not have come here."

Noting that there has never been such an incident in the history of the world that the Prime Minister and the Imam of Baitul Mukarram fled at the same time, he said, “This is a strange incident.”

“There have been movements in many countries, the head of state has fled, the Prime Minister has fled. But the Pope or the priest of the temple has fled, this has not happened. Such an incredible incident has happened in Bangladesh. Corruption is rampant in the state. Public awareness needs to be created on this issue. The media should play a role in this,” he said.

ACC Commissioner (Investigation) Mia Mohammad Ali Akbar Azizi, ACC Commissioner (Enquiry) Brigadier General (Retd) Hafiz Ahsan Farid, spoke on the occasion.
