Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, has called for the prosecution of every instance of mass killing in the country, stressing that justice should be the government's top priority.
He made the statement during a public gathering at a conference organized by the district Jamaat-e-Islami at the Joypurhat Circuit House field on Thursday afternoon.
"Every mass killing in this country must be prosecuted," he declared.
Rahman condemned the violence that occurred from July 1 to August 5 of the previous year, describing it as an event that turned Bangladesh into a "hell." He demanded accountability for the deaths and injuries during this period and urged the government to prioritize the prosecution of those responsible for the mass killings.
“Only when justice is served will the souls of the martyrs find peace, the injured find solace, and the 180 million oppressed people experience happiness,” he added.
The Jamaat leader also raised concerns about the large number of casualties during this period, stating that between 1,500 and 2,000 lives were lost in a span of just one month. He reminded the audience that those who died did not do so for any political power, but to establish an egalitarian, humane, and corruption-free Bangladesh.
Dr. Rahman also emphasized the need for electoral reforms before any elections could take place, reaffirming Jamaat’s commitment to a peaceful, fair process where the will of the people prevails. He clarified that his party was not in a rush for power, but instead advocated for meaningful reforms to ensure democracy.
The conference was chaired by Joypurhat district unit Ameer, Dr. Fazlur Rahman Saeed, with Jamaat leaders Maulana Md. Rafiqul Islam Khan, central Majlis-e-Shura members Professor Maulana Abdur Rahim, and Professor Nazrul Islam also in attendance.
