The Chief of the Electoral Reform Commission Badiul Alam Majumder stated that the Election Commission (EC) will determine who is eligible to participate in the upcoming elections. He clarified that the commission's role is to propose reforms to the electoral system, not to decide individual eligibility.
Badiul Alam Majumder made these comments during a view exchange meeting on election system reforms at the Chittagong District Commissioner's office on Sunday afternoon, where people from various professions shared their views. Commission members Tofail Ahmed and Jasmine Tuli were also present.
“We all want a fair election,” Majumder said. “What we’ve observed is that people are eager to contribute. They want an impartial election that strengthens our democracy. This is the public’s wish, and we are committed to achieving it.”
While the commission will propose reforms, Majumder emphasized that it is the government's responsibility to implement them.
He also discussed ongoing legal proceedings regarding the caretaker government system, mentioning that the High Court’s judgment will likely be reviewed by the Supreme Court. He expressed hope the ruling would be upheld. Additionally, he noted that the Constitution Reform Commission will propose changes that will need parliamentary approval to be incorporated into the constitution.
Regarding Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), Mr. Majumder confirmed that they would not be used in future elections. He also highlighted the need to address issues with the voter list, corruption, and NID discrepancies, particularly regarding expatriate voting rights.
