A low-pressure system has formed in the south-central Bay of Bengal and nearby areas, which may cause rain in Bangladesh as winter sets in, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
Meteorologist Abdur Rahman Khan stated on Tuesday, “The low formed overnight. It will not turn into a depression or a cyclone, but may become a well-marked low,”
He added “Currently, the low pressure is situated near Sri Lanka but it may move near Chattogram and Cox's Bazar. It is likely to cause only rainfall in Bangladesh from Friday."
The rain may continue until Sunday, he said, reports bdnews24.com.
Abdur Rahman said that the temperatures are likely to drop after "three days of rain".
The BMD's long-term December forecast predicts that one or two low-pressure systems may develop over the Bay of Bengal, with at least one potentially intensifying into a depression or cyclonic storm. The current low-pressure system is the second to form in the Bay of Bengal this month.
In November, two low-pressure systems formed over the Bay, one of which strengthened into Cyclone Fengal. However, Fengal did not affect Bangladesh, making landfall on India's Tamil Nadu coast.
According to the latest weather bulletin, the sky may remain partly cloudy with mostly dry weather across the country over the next 24 hours, starting at 9am on Tuesday. Night temperatures are expected to rise slightly, while day temperatures are likely to remain unchanged. Light to moderate fog may occur in some areas from midnight to morning.
On Tuesday, Panchagarh's Tentulia recorded the country's lowest temperature at 9.1 degrees Celsius, while Feni saw the highest temperature at 31.5 degrees Celsius.
