The Advisory Council has approved the proposal to establish a new High Commission of Bangladesh in New Zealand capital Wellington.
The Cabinet Division said this approval was given at the meeting of the Advisory Council on Thursday afternoon. The matter was also confirmed in a press release.
It said that the Advisory Council meeting approved the proposal to establish a new High Commission of Bangladesh in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.
The press release said that New Zealand is known as one of the richest countries in the Southwest Pacific region in terms of political stability and good governance. The country is ranked 16th in the Human Development Index and 32nd in the Global Competitiveness Index. Due to the high purchasing power of the people, this country can be a potential market for Bangladeshi products.
About 10,000 Bangladeshis live in New Zealand and around 1,000 Bangladeshi students are studying in various universities in New Zealand right now. As New Zealand is an island country geographically isolated from the mainland, it is not always possible to ensure proper services to Bangladeshi expatriates in New Zealand from the concurrent country of responsibility, Australia. At the same time, it is said that Bangladeshi expatriates face various adversities, including huge financial expenses, when going to Australia to receive consular services. If the Bangladesh High Commission is established in Wellington, it will be easy and affordable to reach all types of consular services of the embassy directly to Bangladeshi expatriates in New Zealand.
