The newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam said that the police will not make arrests indiscriminately.
He made this remarks at a press conference held at the Police Headquarters around 11 am, on Thursday.
IGP said, "There is no doubt that some members of the police overstepped and violated the law during the July-August period. Maintaining law and order in this country is my primary responsibility. Efforts are underway to restore the morale and confidence of the police."
"The police must treat the public with respect. Through reforms, we aim to make the police more people-friendly," he added.
Referring to the exploitation of false cases, Baharul Alam stated, "Police will not arrest anyone indiscriminately. Innocent individuals will not be harassed. Those who are innocent will be exempted."
He also acknowledged that the whereabouts of several senior police officers, including former Special Branch (SB) Chief Monirul Islam, DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, Detective Branch (DB) Chief Harun ur Rashid, and other absconding officials, remain unidentified.
Regarding the bail of militants imprisoned after August 5, IGP said that the court's decision is final.
