Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma has been summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs. The government has summoned him in connection with the attack on the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, the capital of the Indian state of Tripura.
Pranay Verma has been summoned to the office of Acting Foreign Secretary M Riaz Hamidullah. He has already entered the ministry.
On Monday, supporters of a Hindutva organisations were accused of entering the premises of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala and carrying out the attack. On that day, several hundred people also protested at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) event near the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Mumbai. Hindu Sangharsh Samiti is an affiliate of VHP.
However, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has issued a statement marking the Agartala incident "Unfortunate". They said that diplomatic and consular property should not be targeted under any circumstances.
Seven people were arrested in Tripura on Tuesday in this incident. In addition, administrative action has also been taken against some police personnel.
Bangladesh has condemned and strongly protested the Agartala attack, calling it premeditated. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the attack has deeply discontented the Bangladesh government. The course of events has proven that the attack was premeditated.
Dhaka has also stated that the incident is a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
