Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman has said that decision will be taken on the appeal in the August 21 grenade attack case after examining the reasons for the High Court verdict and taking instructions regarding it.
When asked whether an appeal will be filed against the High Court verdict, Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman told the media over the phone, "A decision will be taken after looking at the reasons for the verdict and taking instructions regarding it. I think an appeal should be filed."
The High Court gave its verdict on Sunday, declaring the judicial court's verdict in the case illegal and null and void based on the supplementary charge sheet. The verdict was given by rejecting the death reference against the judge court's verdict and allowing the appeal of the accused. As a result, all the accused convicted in the case, including BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman and former state minister for home affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar, were acquitted.
A High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain delivered the verdict on Sunday.
The same bench of the High Court concluded the hearing on the death references and appeals of the accused on November 21. On that day, the court kept the two cases pending for verdict (CAV). The verdict was announced on Sunday.
The grenade attack took place on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital on August 21, 2004. The Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 gave its verdict on the case filed in this incident (murder and explosive case) on October 10, 2018. In the verdict, 19 people, including former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar and former Deputy Minister for Education Abdus Salam Pintu, were sentenced to death. 19 people, including BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, were given life imprisonment. In addition, the trial court sentenced 11 people to various terms of imprisonment and fines.
