Bangladesh has urged India to guarantee the safety of diplomatic and non-diplomatic staff at its missions in India, particularly at the Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, following violent protests outside the mission on Thursday.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, Bangladesh expressed deep concern over the incident, where members of the Bongiyo Hindu Jagran, a Kolkata-based Hindu organization, staged violent protests outside the Deputy High Commission. The demonstrators broke through police barricades, reached the mission’s premises, set fire to the Bangladesh national flag, and burned an effigy of Bangladesh's Chief Adviser.
While the situation was reported to be under control, the Government of Bangladesh emphasized the insecurity felt by the staff. In its statement, Bangladesh strongly condemned the desecration of its national flag and the burning of the effigy. It called on the Indian government to take urgent measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
The Government of Bangladesh reaffirmed its opposition to any form of violent activity and reiterated its call for enhanced protection for its diplomatic personnel in India.
