Classmates of Maisha Fauzia Mim, a student of Barishal University, have issued an ultimatum raising a 10-point demand to their vice-chancellor as Maisha was killed due to a road accident.
On Wednesday, the students blocked the highway for a couple of hours. They withdrew the blockade around 1:40 am today(31 october). However, they threatened that they would block the road again if their demands remain unfulfilled.
The students met BU VC Dr Shuchita Sharmin around 12:30 am and presented their demands.
VC Dr. Shuchita Sharmin agreed with their demands as she demanded the arrest of the perpetrator who did this heinous crime.
If her demand is not met, she herself will join the protest.
According to Rahan Hossain Foysal, the Proctor of Barishal University, the students’ demands include the arrest of Maisha's killers by 12 PM on Thursday, compensation for Maisha's family, the construction of a footbridge in front of the university, the implementation of a speed limit on the road near the university gate, improvements to the university's hospital system, road repairs, the deployment of traffic police, and an increase in ambulance services.
When asked about their demands, the protesting students stated that although they had left the streets after receiving assurances from the VC, they would block the road again if their demands were not met.
Deputy Commissioner (South) of Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP), Ali Ashraf Bhuiyan, commented, "It's a horrific incident. We are working diligently to bring the perpetrators to justice."
Maisha tragically lost her life when a Narayanganj Paribahan bus, traveling from Kuakata to Barishal, ran her over in the Bholar Mor area of the BU campus while she was crossing the road.
